Songs from a Mad World

The Poor Old USA

the US was the place to go
The land of the free
at least that's what it claimed to be
The place for peace and health
the land of endless wealth
the land for you and me
the place for opportunity
But what, oh what
what has gone wrong
yes what, oh what
what has gone wrong
What's happened to the poor old USA?
What's happened to the poor old USA?

All was going well
The US had so much to sell
corn and hogs and wheat
the whole world at its feet
the place for new starts
a place for the arts
The land for you and me
the place for technology
But what, oh what
what has gone wrong
yes what, oh what
what has gone wrong
What's happened to the poor old USA?
What's happened to the poor old USA?
In 1946
the US held all the tricks
the richest place on earth
that helped foster our re-birth
the US would aspire
to be the last empire
The land of the free
with others in captivity
But what, oh what
what has gone wrong
yes what, oh what
what has gone wrong
What's happened to the poor old USA?
What's happened to the poor old USA?

How now are the mighty fallen
How now are those dreams all lost
Goodbye to the American dream
Goodbye    USA
The dollar's going down
hear that dreadful crashing sound
The land of the free
partly owned by the free Chinese
banks going bust
factories in  rust
what a tragic scene
no more American dream
Yes what, oh what
what has gone wrong
yes what, oh what
what has gone wrong
What's happened to the poor old USA?
What's happened to the poor old USA?

How now are the mighty fallen
How now are those dreams all lost
Goodbye to the American dream
Goodbye   USA
