Greater Horseshoe Bats

These are one of the biggest and rarest bats in the UK. They have declined in numbers by about 98% in the last 100 years and now only number about 5000. They are the size of a small pear, and their wingspan measure about 35cm.

There is a 100 strong breeding colony of Greater Horseshoe Bats at Berry Head Quarry. And they sure have a great time of it as their caves have been draught-proofed, and cattle have been moved in to provide suitable dung for a supply of dung beetles which is just the kind of thing to perk up a hungry bat.
