The town of Dawlish is cut off from the sea by Brunel's railway. The main line from Paddington to Penzance runs right along the coast. To get to the sea from the town you have to go under the low railway arches.

There is The Lawn, which is a landscaped garden with a stream running through it in the middle of the town, and ducks by the truckful everywhere. Try not to reverse over one, as I unfortunately did

There are also black swans in Dawlish Water, originally from Perth in Australia

There is also a two mile beach at Dawlish Warren, which runs along the south bank of the Exe estuary. There are other beaches, and fantastic cliff

A couple of miles up the estuary is Powderham Castle, a magnificent medieval pile which has been in the Courtenay family for over 600 years. There are magnificent state rooms, including the music room, and a splendidly grand staircase.

The grounds contain a herd of fallow deer, and there is a Victorian walled garden with rabbits, guinea pigs, peacocks, goats, and pheasants.
