The village dates back to the middle ages, and much of the village centre dates back to the sixteenth century. The Old Toll House still boasts its original board of tolls, though now restored.
There are local examples of hut circles and burial chambers on the open moor, and nearby Shipley Bridge is the starting point for several walks. One walk leads to the remains of Ryder's Ring, which is a completely enclosed settlement inside which are a number of hut circles that date back to the Bronze Age. Another path takes walkers to the Eastern Wittaburrow which was first described in 1240 as "a very fine burial heap". It stand 30 feet high and has a circumference of about 250 feet. There are other cairns and remains of settlements dating back to 3,500 B.C. (link?) |
